Lily’s Garden Pediatric Leukemia Program at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt
The Lily’s Garden Pediatric Leukemia Program provides critical funding to advance pediatric cancer research with a strong focus on finding cures that are not only effective, but far less toxic for children. By supporting innovative, forward-thinking studies, the program empowers researchers to explore targeted therapies and new treatment approaches designed to improve survival rates while reducing long-term side effects.
These efforts are especially important in pediatric leukemia, where traditional treatments, while lifesaving, can often come with lasting impacts on a child’s development and overall health. Through continued investment in cutting-edge research, Lily’s Garden is helping drive breakthroughs that aim to cure more children while preserving their quality of life for years to come.
At the same time, the program recognizes that behind every diagnosis is a family navigating an incredibly difficult journey. By offering support, resources, and a sense of community, Lily’s Garden ensures families are not alone—bringing hope for better treatments, gentler cures, and brighter, healthier futures for every child affected by leukemia.
Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt
Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt is the place where the community turns for children's cancer care. Through annual fundraising and contribution efforts, we have been fortunate to be instrumental in the creation and continued support of the Lily’s Garden Childhood Cancer Endowed Fellowship, which supports a pediatric fellowship in oncology. This cause is one that is close to our hearts and has helped to drive our success so that we may give more.
Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt is named in honor of community leader and philanthropist Monroe Carell Jr. (1932-2008). Monroe was a businessman, founder of Central Parking Corp. and philanthropist with deep ties to Nashville. Monroe and his wife, Ann Scott Carell (1935-2012), were philanthropic leaders at Vanderbilt for many years. They funded the Ann and Monroe Carell Jr. Chair of Pediatric Cardiology and several full-tuition scholarships at the University. Monroe also served as chair of Vanderbilt's Shape the Future Campaign and the Children's Hospital Capital Campaign.
A legacy of care
Through Carell’s generous gifts, Children’s Hospital was built in 2004, and was expanded in 2012 and 2020. His dream for a standalone Children's Hospital was born from his compassion for patients, tireless support for doctors and staff and generous financial gifts.
